What does a whole house generator hookup actually cost?

There is no set number because the generator and pad usually arrive already in place, and what drives the labor is the condition of your existing panel and service, not the generator itself. Why the same-looking job costs different amounts

Most of the standby generator work we schedule in Lee, Collier, Charlotte, and Hendry counties starts after the generator and its pad are already sitting in the yard, ordered separately or included with the unit's purchase. What we're pricing at that point is the electrical connection between that generator and your house, and that connection depends almost entirely on what's already at your panel.

If your panel has room for a transfer switch and the run from panel to pad is short and straightforward, the labor-only standby install is scheduled at 8 hours. If the panel is older, undersized, crowded with double-tapped breakers, or the generator is going somewhere that means a long conduit run, that changes the job. This is why we send someone out for an evaluation, billed as a Panel / EV Charger / Generator / Major Electrical Upgrades visit at 1.5 hours, before quoting the install. It's the only honest way to price it, because a phone estimate for a whole house generator hookup is a guess dressed up as a number.

Interlock and inlet versus a full standby hookup

Not every generator job is a whole-home standby install. A lot of what we do is simpler: a generator inlet box on the outside of the house wired to an interlock kit at the panel, so a portable generator can safely power selected circuits during an outage. That's a 1 hour standard job when the panel already has room for it.

Some homes already have a 30A inlet and interlock from an older portable generator setup and want to move up to 50A, either for a bigger portable unit or to get more circuits covered. That upgrade involves swapping in a larger Square D breaker and rerunning the inlet wiring, and because every panel is laid out a little differently, that one is quoted per job rather than scheduled at a flat hour figure.

A true whole-home standby generator, wired through an automatic transfer switch so the house switches over without anyone touching a breaker, is the 8 hour labor-only job, and it assumes the generator and pad are already in place when we arrive. Keeping it working before the next storm actually hits

Southwest Florida's hurricane season runs June through November, and the failure mode nobody wants is a generator that hasn't run since last year not starting when a storm is on the way. That's the reason behind the two maintenance plans we schedule separately from installs: an annual visit for portable and inlet-based systems, and either an annual or bi-annual premium visit for standby whole-home units, each about an hour on site.

These visits aren't part of the install cost and aren't required to have the hookup work. They exist because a generator that sits unused for ten months a year needs someone checking the battery, the transfer switch operation, and the fuel or gas supply before the season it's actually needed.

Can I use my portable generator with just an extension cord instead of an inlet?

Running extension cords through windows or doors during an outage is common, but it's not what an inlet and interlock kit is for. The inlet lets the generator power your permanent wiring safely through the panel, with the utility connection locked out, instead of running cords to individual appliances.

My generator and pad are already sitting in the yard. What happens next?

That's the normal starting point for most standby jobs we take on. We schedule the evaluation visit first to look at your panel and the run to the pad, then quote the connection work itself, which is where the 8 hour labor figure applies if the panel doesn't need other work first.

Is an interlock kit as good as a full transfer switch?

An interlock kit is a legitimate, commonly used approach that lets a portable generator feed your panel safely, but it requires someone to manually switch over during an outage. A transfer switch, used with a standby unit, does that switching automatically. Which one fits depends on the generator you have and what you want it to cover.
